Peloton rider James Oram is the latest to shed a few pounds overnight after dropping by the gym to workout.
The 26-year-old said he dropped about five pounds overnight following the recent news that he will be out of the Tour de France, the first major event of the year, after spending three months on the road recovering from an Achilles injury.
Oram said he’s been in the gym every day since he returned from the Tour, adding that it’s not a problem that has been holding him back.
“I think I lost about 5-10 pounds on the ride home,” Oram told reporters after his ride home.
“It’s been a bit of a challenge to drop off the bike and get on a treadmill and run.”
But I think the last couple of days I’ve been feeling better, and I think it’s been the right decision.
“My body is definitely more in shape than it was before I came back from the tour, so I think that has helped me a lot.”
Oram is one of the most accomplished riders in the peloton, having won a stage of the Vuelta a Espana and won the Tour Down Under in 2015, as well as the Tour of Oman and the Tour Divide.
Orsula Varela, who also finished fourth in the Vuadal, is also on the list of riders to lose a few kilograms, as she has gained about 20 kilograms since she began riding for the team last year.
“We’re looking forward to getting back out on the bike again, which will be the biggest challenge of the entire season,” said Varella.
“I have a lot of respect for the guys out there who are working really hard, and it’s great to see that they’re able to get on the saddle again and get to the races.”
The first thing is just to stay fit.
We have a plan in place to have a full recovery, so we’ll see how things go.
